The Day of Atonement
The Day of Atonement on the 10th of Tishri is the day of national repentance alluded to throughout Scripture. Hebrews 9 describes the ceremonial day, and it is essentially here on the Day of Atonement that the Isaiah 53 prophecy is fulfilled. The word kippur indicates “covering,” the day in which blood covers the sins of the people.
Yom Kippur is a supremely sacred day in the Jewish year. It was on this day and this day alone that the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies – and even then only following enormous ceremonial preparation. No one was permitted to enter into the Holy of Holies except on that single sober day of the year. When Israel had to shift its camp, an elaborate procedure was required to prevent a soul from directly touching the Ark of the Covenant.
The Holy of Holies was the throne room of God, filled with His presence. The cherubim hovered over the Seat of Mercy on the Ark of the Covenant, gazing down at the broken Law kept inside the Ark.
The symbolism in Leviticus 16 is clear. There in the Holy of Holies, God saw the broken Law inside the Ark of the Covenant and the failure of His children to live up to it. Then He saw the blood cover it, the blood shed and sprinkled on the Mercy Seat on the Ark to atone for the broken Law. The blood of bulls and goats, however, only acted as a holding place. The true blood sacrifice has been directly propitiated by the shed blood of Christ. God no longer sees our sin represented in those cracked tablets, He sees the blood of Christ “given for you.”
Every year the priest would sprinkle blood on the Mercy Seat – the Seat of God’s Mercy – but Christ’s blood has been sprinkled there once for all time.
This is a major study in and of itself, and I encourage you to undertake it yourself as it is very worthwhile. These celebrations point to a future; they are not just the story of the past.
Yom Kippur has a very interesting origin, one which will cast an illuminating light on the atoning blood of Christ. According to Leviticus 16:6-10, along with a bull and a ram there were two goats to be presented before the LORD. One was the emissary goat that was sacrificed, and the other was the emissary goat upon which the sins of the people of Israel were placed by the hands of Aaron through a ceremony in the Tabernacle. Lots were cast on the two goats which the LORD selected, one to be sacrificed as a sin offering. The other carried the sins of the Nation of Israel into the wilderness, never to return. The goat of atonement was sacrificed; the scapegoat was sent with the burden of sin into the wilderness.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
